Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis was born on 16 December 1984 in High Wycombe, England. He is the son of Philip Taptiklis, a business consultant, and Jane (Martin), who worked for the National Health Service. His paternal grandfather was Greek (he moved from the Peloponnese to New Zealand). His other ancestry is English and Scottish. James is the youngest of five children, having two older brothers and two older sisters.
James was raised in Askett, Buckinghamshire, England. He attended Aylesbury Grammar School and went on to earn his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Nottingham. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
James is married to Irish actress Ruth Kearney. The two met at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. They divide their time between Venice Beach, California, and North London.
Outside his acting career, James was the singer and guitarist of the London-based band Shere Khan, which disbanded in 2012. In 2015, he became the brand ambassador for Hugo Boss fragrances for men, appearing in print ads and commercials.
In June 2016, James travelled to Greece with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where he met Syrian refugees and learned more about their situation. He has since been a supporter of refugees’ rights and called for greater humanitarian aid for people displaced by the Syrian Civil War.
British actor, producer and model Theo James has been a High Profile Supporter of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency since 2016. Theo has supported UNHCR’s work through visiting Greece and following the story of a Syrian refugee, as well as attending fundraising and advocacy events, and lending his talents to UNHCR projects.
In 2019, he used his acting talents to provide the voiceover for a video for UNHCR’s High Level Segment on Statelessness, a forum which gave an opportunity for UN Member States to announce key achievements that have been made to address statelessness worldwide since UNHCR launched the #IBelong Campaign to End Statelessness.
Theo has a very personal story that connects him to the refugee situation. His Grandfather, Dr. Nicholas Taptiklis, fled Greece during the Second World War, making his way by boat and then overland through Turkey to Damascus, Syria. Immediately after the Second World War ended, Dr. Taptiklis worked in Gottingen, Germany with the organisation that was the precursor to the UN Refugee Agency, fighting typhoid and tuberculosis in the refugee camps.

“I don’t have it and I never will. Other actors I know are really good at it and they rock and roll it, but it’s not for me. If I post a picture of us having a drink now and get loads of views or comments and stuff, then suddenly you’re quite exposed and you’re in a world of work,” he tells Flaunt. “I just like being present.”
